Liam Sweeny is a thirty-two-year-old writer, musician and artist from upstate NY. He has had an active mind since his youth, writing essays and poetry at age
ten. He has been active in social justice just as long, attending
homeless rallies, studying and participating in various humanitarian
causes. He graduated from Watervliet High School and received an
Associates Degree in Individual Studies from Hudson Valley Community
College in Troy in 2000.
In 1997, Sweeny suffered a major manic episode, requiring over a month of
hospitalization. As a way to cope with the illness, Sweeny harnesses
the energy of mania into his work, giving it a visceral quality
difficult to replicate without the raw emotion that comes with bipolar
disorder. Sweeny has
volunteered in varying capacities in local grassroots political races
in Albany before spending time in Baton Rouge, Louisiana as a volunteer
for Catholic Charities. His interactions with victims and evacuees, and
studies of the impact of Hurricane Katrina had a profound impact on
him, and on his writing. His first novel, Anno Luce, was released in April of 2008.
